This might be hard to see, but you can make out at least 4 distinct cyclists in this photo, taken on Pass Ave. in Burbank.  There were in fact about 6 guys and girls on bikes shouting to each other, taking up all lanes of traffic, completely ignoring the other drivers on the road.  They could care less that we were driving behind them, as they arbitrarily stopped and started, weaving erratically in the lane.  As they all turned onto Oak, half of the group went into the opposing lane of traffic on the other side of the concrete median.  The entire group then blew a stop sign as they made a left onto a side street directly in front of a car that was about to make a right turn after having properly stopped at the intersection.  You would think this was a group of young punks in junior high, but this was in fact a group of average-looking men and women in their mid-20′s.  Bikes need to share the roads just as much as cars do, and they’re obligated to follow traffic laws and regulations.  Now, I’m not a stickler about following everything to a tee, but driving on the wrong side of the road in the middle of the lane, holding up traffic, and blowing right past other drivers at stop signs that may or may not have seen you is selfish, careless, and stupid.  These laws exist to keep us safe, not to simply inconvenience us.

  1. I wholeheartedly agree with you. It’s kind of shocking that adults could be that careless and inconsiderate. Especially when they’re on bikes and could easily be injured by a car.

  2. Some people should take the BUS!

  3. I’ve seem CHP officers/training doing that shit, taking up all the lanes on their bicycles not motorcycles, freakin Bicycles, thinking just because they’re law enforcement. Well hope they don’t annoy or psst off someone that will surely run their ass over.

  4. How about bike riders talking on the cell phones! I see it more and more every day, and I’m not talking about Bluetooth. These idiots are actually using a hand to hold the phone. Shouldn’t the law that automobile drivers ignore also apply to cyclists? That is even more dangerous! Go figure!

  5. So if one hand is holding the gun and one hand is holding the donut, which hand is steering the bicycle? Just had to ask!

  6. I think those guys are a part of the Midnite Ridaz. They are a group of cyclists that ride around at night and sometimes do childish things in different parts of the city.

  7. For what it’s worth, here’s the non emergency number to the Burbank Police Dept. I’ve found them responsive. I think it would be worth a call the next time someone spots a problem in Burbank.

  8. Hey NWD, I have them on my cell phone. You’re right, they come very quickly.

  9. It’s even more annoying when law enforcement does that shit. Take my CHP example above, they were literally sprawled out on all lanes blocking traffic.

  10. I got stuck behind this same group one day on Glenoaks. They were riding double, cruising like five mph in a 40-mph zone with traffic backed up behind them. I hollered at them to ride single-file, and when I came back the other way they were indeed riding single file. I dunno, maybe they were more clueless than deliberately obnoxious, but damn, anyone who’s made it to adulthood should have enough intelligence to figure out some minimal courtesy on the road. Of course, anyone driving in L.A. knows that’s not the case…

On the other hand, I do have a positive trip to report! A few days ago I drove from the Burbank area to the Miracle Mile and back, a 90-minute drive, and did not observe one single extreme incident of rudeness or idiocy either from drivers or bike riders. Maybe it was an encounter with a miracle while passing through the Miracle Mile? Or maybe there are people who would rather not have their vehicles appear on this blog?! ;D

  11. Lorri, good to hear about your problem-free ride! Truth be told, I would trade this blog for safe streets any day :) .

  12. It’s not an honor to have your car posted on this website. That is why I leave early and drive safe. I don’t want to see my 2008 Saturn Astra XR, nor my 1988 Honda Accord Hatchback, nor my 1975 Chevrolet Nova, nor my 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle spread out on this website. I keep ‘em in one piece!
