Orange County Can’t Drive

With all this talk about Santa Barbara and Ventura, I thought it fitting to share this submission about Orange County.  Yes, it’s Orange County….not “The OC.”  You will never–ever–hear me say that.  Saying OC is fine, but THE OC?  Uh…no.  There’s enough pretension down there, particularly along the waterfronts, thank you very much.

“I just wanted to submit this.  I lived and drove in LA for quite some time, and in my opinion LA drivers are worse than OC drivers, but Orange County still has its share of assholes as well.  The lady in this Mercedes had been tailgating me for quite some time, and after deciding I was insulting her by going so slow (the speed limit) she decided to gun it, pass me, and cut in front of me.  As you can see in the lane on the right, there are no cars; but instead of staying in that lane, she decided to pull this crap again and tailgate the person she’s now behind, and the same thing happens.  You can see how close she is while she cuts to the right and gets as close as possible to the bumper of the car in front of her.  It’s not as if there’s a ton of traffic in this picture!  Anyway, this is on Red Hill in Costa Mesa.”

What sort of message do these people actually think they’re conveying to other drivers?  It can’t be something as stupid as “I own this road”.  True, slower traffic should stay the right, but why tailgate aggressively over and over again?  Just stay in the #2 lane until you find the clearance to drive like a lonely biznatch in heat–that is until you get pulled over by an officer for speeding.  On the whole, though, I think most aggressive drivers like this lady feel that driving is a sport, not a skill.  They look at a driver’s license as a right, not a privilege.  They erroneously believe that speeding, weaving, and erratic passing are demonstrations of skill as opposed to reckless abandon, and they view traffic laws and regulations as whistle-happy officials that just slow the rhythm of sporty play.  Well, if you must think of driving as a sport, then consider your aggressive behaviors as unsportsmanlike if you must.  Otherwise, spend some money and get your jollies out on a closed racetrack.  That way if you ever get in an accident, you’ll be the only one to pay.
