Los Angeles drivers can't drive. Plain and simple. Basic traffic laws and driving etiquette clearly do not apply in a town where the people seem to operate in their own little bubble, completely unaware or dismissive of others on the road. Call it what you will: self-entitlement, negligence, malaise, ignorance. My goal? To have mandatory driving tests randomly issued where drivers are eligible for selection after 6 years. Consider this jury duty for the road.

Unfortunately, banning texting and non-hands-free cell phone use doesn't mean squat unless it's more rigorously enforced.

I think it was a great thing that banned the cell phone being used in the car. This can prevent alot of traffic crashes and violations.

I know I have been almost hit because of people talking on phones.

I am HOH, personally, I'm on the road 30k miles a year. Over half of that is spent with a cell phone to my ear. I do coffee along with that for 1/4 of the time.

I have no accidents, and oddly enough I drive safer when I'm on the phone due to no longer being bored on the road. My tires last longer and so does my gas and oil.

The advantages of being on the phone appeal to me. I'm not bored, using less gas, and burning through fewer tires. It increases my cost savings on the highway upwards of 20 percent.

But nonetheless my deliminator is that I haven't found a hearing aid compatible blue tooth headset except for one that covers both ears. The speaker things aren't loud enough for my hearing aid to pickup clearly and understand. Or, I run into the problem of the headset wanting to be where my hearing aid is and it's not loud enough by itself to be of use.

I got the blue tooth phone, I just have no way to use it legally. I've been still using it over the last year, and I just simply tell people to wait a min when police show up and just quietly distance myself from the officer in sight. It's worked for 30k miles and a year thus far.

I'm not really a bad driver, I'm just hyper and need things to occupy part of my mind. The part that I use for driving and talking are two separate parts.

Sara, it's not so much as administrative fees as much as legal fees/penalty assessments. Take a look at this page for some explanation: http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/Traffic/penalty.htm.

It basically explains that there is a dollar amount added to all fines and for bail for infractions and minor misdemeanors.

Radios actually used to be illegal in cars, believe it or not. Either way, you have a point, because there are some states that have laws where those with the least driving experience who take the most risks--namely teenagers--are not allowed to have more than one other teenager in the car with them.

I don't understand the logic behind those people saying that drivers should not be allowed to talk on their cell phones, at all, while they're driving. If that were the case then the driver shouldn't be allowed to talk at all while they're driving. Talking on a cell phone or talking to a passenger is no different. Can you imagine getting a ticket for telling your kids to calm down in the back seat while your driving... or having a cop pull you over cause your singing with a song on the radio? Think about it.
