Los Angeles drivers can't drive. Plain and simple. Basic traffic laws and driving etiquette clearly do not apply in a town where the people seem to operate in their own little bubble, completely unaware or dismissive of others on the road. Call it what you will: self-entitlement, negligence, malaise, ignorance. My goal? To have mandatory driving tests randomly issued where drivers are eligible for selection after 6 years. Consider this jury duty for the road.

Tara, thanks again for sharing and for the congrats. We definitely our in good company.

And Drew, you bring up a very good point. Hearing-impaired drivers have every right to share the streets if they can show that they can obey traffic laws, regulations, etc., just like every other citizen. I applaud you for being so attentive behind the wheel, and I wouldn't be surprised if you're a far better driver than the average Angeleno.

"For the last time, people, it doesn’t matter which direction the sound is coming from, by law you must pull over to the side of the road whenever you hear the sirens of emergency vehicles,"

Exactly! Glad you were able to retell my driving story. Knew I had to send it to you. Congrats on the LA Snark and About.com mentions, you're in good company ;)

Not to defend the drivers here, but it's entirely possible that one or both of them may have been deaf and thus unable to hear the sirens in the first place. That being the case, however, that doesn't excuse them for not paying attention to what's happening around them. I'm deaf myself and am constantly checking my mirrors and monitoring traffic around me. If people start pulling over I'll check around me and see what's going on. But with LA drivers being what they are it's probably just a case of being oblivious and self-absorbed.
